Frequently asked questions

What are the current Stripe fees?
Stripe's standard US online rate is 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. International cards add ~1.5%. Manually entered cards add another 0.5%. Rates vary by country and volume — verify at stripe.com/pricing.
What are PayPal's current fees?
PayPal charges 3.49% + $0.49 for standard Checkout and goods/services transactions. PayPal Here (in-person) is 2.29% + $0.09. Rates vary by country — check paypal.com/fees for current pricing.
Which payment processor is cheapest for freelancers?
On standard US rates, Stripe (2.9% + $0.30) usually comes out cheapest, Square (3.3% + $0.30) is in the middle, and PayPal (3.49% + $0.49) is typically most expensive. However, the gap shrinks on small payments and can flip if you negotiate volume rates.
Why do small transactions have higher effective fees?
Because of the fixed per-transaction fee. A $0.30 fee on a $10 charge is 3% before the percentage even applies. On a $5 charge, that same $0.30 fixed fee adds 6% to the effective rate. This is why processors are relatively more expensive on small transactions.
How do I calculate what to charge to receive a specific amount?
Use reverse calculation: Charge Amount = (Target Amount + Fixed Fee) ÷ (1 - Percentage Rate). For example, to net $100 via Stripe: ($100 + $0.30) ÷ (1 - 0.029) = $103.29. This ensures you receive exactly what you need after fees.
